Day 4: Simplify

Liquid error: Nil location provided. Can't build URI.

Simple. It's a pretty word, but do you know what it means?

Basic. Easy. Lacking in COMPLEXITY.

I used to reject the idea of simplicity. Seriously, without chaos and ongoing "excitement," I felt like I would die.

Something inside me kept screaming that I wasn't living if things were simple (like it was a bad word).

Slow living? Nuh-uh.

Now, a lot of that was homeostasis (the tendency toward equilibrium)- in other words, it was what I was used to.

But I also had a very wrong idea of what living a simple life was. (Hint: it isn't mind-numbingly boring when you do it right).

So, how did I go from feeling repulsed by the idea of simple living to someone who geeks out on designing a simple life?

In short, I learned that the secret to creating simplicity involves more of what I love and less of what I hate.

Ironically, when living the "exciting life," I constantly sabotaged myself with things I didn't like (or even hated).

Things like drama and a fast heart rate 🥴.

Designing a simple life is, well, simple.

You only need three things  to do it:

  1. Find what matters.
  2. Remove the noise.
  3. Create space.

If you want to dive deeper into those, click the link above.

🧘‍♀️ Create space

For now, I want to focus on point 3- creating space. How can we simplify even this part of the process?

When taming our homes, we tend to steer toward the most complicated and sophisticated systems.

The layers of plastic, with latches, that spin. Or a 5-part filing system with color-coded labels.

Unfortunately, this often leads to more clutter. It's a revolving door. You buy more organizers that create more clutter, so you buy more organizers. 🧐

Letting go of things is uncomfortable; spending money on a quick fix isn't.

Let your organization be simple.

Complexity isn't better.

Aside from using simple organization methods, I encourage you to embrace a bit of minimalism in your space.

Try to see the beauty in spaciousness- the mental clarity in high visibility and the breathability and mobility your body could experience in  choosing space over stuff .

I know that's a lot of "ilities," but at the end of the day, mass is mass.

There's only so much space you can create by organizing vs. minimizing.

Take a deep, simple breath.

Hold it.

And let it go. Just like you're about to let go of the things in your home that add unnecessary complication and chaos.

🤩 Your turn! You have time freedom on this one. You can commit to 10 minutes or a full hour- it's up to you! :)

Tomorrow's the last day- you're so close! We'll be discussing how not to fail (I couldn't let you leave this challenge without ensuring you're set for success).

All my best,

Mia
